The National Association of Secondary School Principals publishes a list of approved contests and scholarship competitions.  NASSP does not recommend students participate in dubious recognition programs such as Who’s Who, Society of Distinguished High School Students, National Society of High School Scholars, America’s Outstanding Names and Faces, etc.  The NASSP gives three basic reasons for their position:

1. “Any recognition accorded to students through mere inclusion in such a publication is of little or no value and is unlikely to provide any future educational or personal benefit;

2. The sponsoring organization is unlikely to be able to verify that students actually measure up to the selection criteria since nominations ordinarily come from a variety of sources; and

3. The organizations sponsoring these programs are commercial in nature, having no connection with educational, philanthropic, or professional associations.”
